It is no surprise that today’s teens are heavily involved in what they see online. Large social media platforms such as Tiktok and Instagram are essentially placed on pedestals by members of today's youth, spoon feeding them new trends daily. However, exposure to these aspects allows adolescence to seek concepts or ideals that may apply to them!
Virtual communities have boomed over the decades, allowing groups with similar interests or niches to connect, without geographical distance posing as a barrier. Apps such as X, formerly known as Twitter, dives deep into hundreds, thousands, possibly even millions of different subcultural groups, each with their own individual spaces and curated circles. With a simple search of designated curiosities or hobbies, teens immediately gain access and dive into a world of possibilities – examples include #marveltwt, #kpoptwt, #bylertwt, etc. These specific groups allow teens to find their voices through piqued interest, as well as explore potential others, building a safe space for themselves and others.
Furthermore, to say the internet is completely wide-ranging would be an understatement. Every day, information from around the world is brought through media, whether it be on a newsletter headline, or on the feed that is widely curated to each individual being. With that being said, time spent online correlates greatly with one’s exposure to worldwide conflicts, such as politics. This exposure often shapes teens' moral compasses and influences their beliefs about social and political issues. Additionally, as teens spend more time on social media, they become greatly acquainted with the unrealistic standards that are expected amongst today’s youth; this is a direct bridge to forcing people to conform to collective standards, oftentimes losing their own identity in the process.
Through different lenses, the trends that flow in and out of the hands of modern society can be posed as killer, however, it may also be an open door to those to have trouble identifying themselves. As everyone’s day to day changes, societal influences come and go as well! There is no shame in finding a supportive environment that allows inner desires and interests to flourish.
